Diabetes, Alzheimer’s – Hanganak expands the scope of practical skills

A regular meeting on the monthly online trainings for Hanganak staff took place on September 22. The courses were conducted by the A.W.W.A. members: psychiatrist-gerontologist Dr. Jane Mahakyan and public health specialist Nancy Barsamyan.

According to the pre-arranged schedule, Nancy Barsamyan continued and summarized the guidelines for managing patients with diabetes according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention – a concise and complete lecture to complement the guide that was provided to the medical staff of Hanganak a few days ago. The guide was developed and adopted by the NKR Ministry of Health in 2009.

The second half of the meeting was dedicated to Alzheimer’s disease. This topic was not chosen by chance, September 21 has been marked as an Alzheimer awareness day for 10 years now, people around the world are coming towards a common goal: to raise public awareness about Alzheimer’s disease, to overcome the existing challenges. This year, Armenia has joined the World Alzheimer’s Awareness Day, and various events will be held during the month.

Dr. Jane Mahakyan founded Alzheimer’s Care Armenia in 2017, whose main mission in Armenia is to create sustainable programs and services for people with memory loss and their families. As one of the leading specialists, Jane Mahakyan presented the symptoms of the disease in detail and the difference between aging dementia and the disease. She told about disease progression, modern methods of diagnosis and treatment, patient management and care.

At the end of the meeting, they talked about the 3rd International Congress of Geriatrics and Gerontology to be held on September 30 by the Association of the Health Care Provision to the Elderly. Hanganak is also invited to the congress.
