Group Therapy Sessions at Hanganak: Conversations on Faith, Strength, and Inner Hope

At Hanganak, our group therapy meetings have become a cherished space where our beneficiaries can speak openly, share memories, and find comfort in one another. Led by psychotherapist Dr. Anahit Lalayan, these sessions offer emotional support, healing, and a sense of belonging.

During the last two gatherings, Dr. Lalayan invited participants to choose the discussion topic themselves. Their choice was heartfelt and deeply meaningful — Faith.

The conversations flowed with honesty, vulnerability, and wisdom. Participants spoke about faith in God, faith in life, and — perhaps most importantly — faith in themselves, especially during difficult times. Many reflected on moments when inner belief helped them overcome challenges, loss, and uncertainty.

The atmosphere was warm and respectful, filled with quiet strength and shared understanding. Even those who usually speak less felt encouraged to participate, creating a circle of trust and emotional support.

Here are some of the reflections shared during the sessions:

“Faith kept me standing when everything else felt uncertain.”
“When I lose confidence, I remind myself that God has never left me alone. That gives me strength.”
“I realized that believing in myself is also part of faith — it means recognizing my own value.”
“Even in the darkest moments, a small hope inside us says that tomorrow can be better.”
“I came here today feeling heavy, but listening to others made me feel lighter. We carry each other’s strength.”

To support their emotional expression with gentle physical activity, kinesitherapist Anush Shekyan guided the group through simple yet effective hand exercises designed to improve fine motor skills of the fingers. The exercises brought calmness, presence, and a shared moment of mindfulness.

At the end of the meeting, our young volunteer Anush Kasyan prepared tea for the group, and everyone enjoyed tea and sweets together. This small, heartfelt gesture added an extra layer of warmth and connection to the day — a simple moment that made everyone feel cared for and valued.

These gentle, heartfelt exchanges once again showed that community is a powerful healer.
Through Dr. Lalayan’s guidance, the group rediscovered the comforting truth that faith — whether spiritual or personal — is something we nurture together.

At Hanganak, we will continue creating spaces where our elders can speak freely, feel heard, and find emotional connection. Every session reminds us that healing happens not only through therapy, but also through kindness, shared stories, and the presence of people who truly listen.
