Group Therapy through Cinema: Reflections and Healing

Psychological group therapy remains an important part of our work with Hanganak beneficiaries, providing them with a safe space to reflect, share, and heal together. In our most recent session, the format was a little different — a movie screening followed by a group discussion.

The movie told the story of an elderly woman whose daughter decides to place her in a nursing home. Wishing to ease her mother’s loneliness, the daughter asks a kind man to help her regain interest in life there — to inspire her to see that joy, care, and connection are still possible even in such a setting.

This touching story resonated deeply with our beneficiaries. Many saw reflections of their own fears — of separation, of being left behind, of the emptiness that sometimes shadows old age. Yet they also spoke about the courage it takes to find new reasons to live, the comfort of kindness, and the healing power of human connection.

During the discussion, the room filled with honesty, empathy, and hope. Some participants shared their personal experiences of loss and loneliness; others expressed gratitude for the community they now have in Hanganak. One beneficiary said quietly: “The movie reminded me of my own fears… but also showed me that even in a new place, life can continue if there are people who care.”

What began as a conversation about a movie became a journey into shared emotions and renewed strength. These moments remind us why psychological support is so essential. Beyond medical care, what our elders need most is compassion, belonging, and a reminder that life can still hold meaning. At Hanganak, we are committed to creating these spaces of healing — where hearts are lifted, and no one feels alone.
