Hanganak NGO continues its Healthy Lifestyle workshop series with another engaging and educational session—this time dedicated to the topic of osteoporosis, a widespread condition that especially affects older adults. Once again, the subject was chosen by our beneficiaries, reflecting the real needs and concerns of our community.
The workshop was led by Dr. Lilya Seyranyan, who provided a comprehensive lecture on osteoporosis. She explained that osteoporosis is a progressive bone disease characterized by loss of bone density and quality, which leads to fragile bones and an increased risk of fractures. The most common fracture sites include the hip, spine, and wrist.
Dr. Seyranyan highlighted the main risk factors, such as aging, hormonal changes (especially in postmenopausal women), inadequate calcium and vitamin D intake, sedentary lifestyle, smoking, and certain chronic illnesses. She emphasized the importance of early diagnosis, introducing participants to modern diagnostic methods, particularly bone density testing (DEXA scan), which allows timely detection and prevention.
During the lecture, the beneficiaries asked many questions, showing great interest in the topic. Dr. Seyranyan discussed both traditional treatment options—like calcium and vitamin D supplementation, medications that strengthen bone tissue, and hormone therapy—as well as new approaches in prevention and management, which focus on lifestyle modification, exercise, and nutrition.
Following the educational part, participants took part in an exercise session guided by Anush Shekyan, professional physical therapist, who regularly leads the physical activity component of our workshops. She introduced simple but effective exercises designed to improve balance, posture, and muscle strength, all of which play a critical role in preventing falls and fractures among older adults.
To conclude the day, at the request of the beneficiaries, the group prepared a delicious fruit pie under the leadership of one of the participants. Shared with tea, this joyful moment once again demonstrated the spirit of community and togetherness that makes our workshops so special.
Through this workshop, Hanganak reaffirmed its commitment to promoting education, prevention, and active participation—helping our beneficiaries take practical steps toward healthier and more fulfilling lives.
