Healthy Lifestyle Workshop: Understanding Osteoarthrosis and Celebrating the International Day of Older Persons

On October 1st, the International Day of Older Persons, Hanganak marked the occasion with a special event from its ongoing Healthy Lifestyle series. The workshop was dedicated to raising awareness about osteoarthrosis—the most common chronic joint disease and one of the leading causes of disability among older adults.

The session was led by physician Dr. Lilya Seyranyan, who explained that osteoarthrosis is a degenerative disease of the joints, often affecting the knees, hips, spine, and hands. She highlighted key causes and risk factors, including age-related cartilage wear, previous joint injuries, excess body weight, genetic predisposition, and prolonged repetitive stress on the joints.

Dr. Seyranyan emphasized that while the disease is progressive, much can be done to prevent complications and slow its development. She advised seniors to maintain regular physical activity—such as walking, stretching, or swimming—to keep joints mobile, and to avoid long periods of inactivity. A balanced diet rich in vegetables, fruits, omega-3 fatty acids, and calcium can also support joint and bone health. Maintaining a healthy body weight reduces stress on weight-bearing joints, and learning joint-protective techniques in daily activities can significantly improve quality of life.

The session was not only informative but also empowering, giving beneficiaries the chance to ask questions, share personal experiences, and feel encouraged in taking steps toward healthier living.

After the educational part, the atmosphere turned festive. Together, our seniors prepared a traditional Greek salad—colorful, fresh, and full of vitamins and healthy fats that are beneficial for joints and the cardiovascular system. This was more than just cooking: it was a joyful moment of togetherness and celebration of healthy food. The salad was enjoyed around the table, accompanied by warm, fragrant tea lovingly prepared by our young volunteer, a high school student Anush Kasyan. Her kindness and energy created a beautiful bridge between generations, filling the room with warmth, laughter, and connection.

Through this workshop, Hanganak not only provided medical knowledge but also created an experience of community, support, and joy. It reminded us that well-being is not just about managing illness—it is about staying active, eating wisely, and cherishing moments of companionship. Hanganak will continue its mission to empower seniors with knowledge, skills, and human closeness—so they may live healthier, more active, and fulfilling lives.
