AWWA: A Lifeline for Artsakh’s Elderly After Forced Displacement
“In our hardest hour, AWWA gave us hope.”

In September 2023, Azerbaijan’s military offensive led to the forced exodus of Artsakh’s entire population. Among those displaced were Hanganak’s dedicated staff and 320 elderly beneficiaries—vulnerable seniors uprooted from their ancestral homeland with little more than the clothes on their backs. Stripped of homes, basic resources, and support networks, they faced unimaginable uncertainty and hardship.

In those darkest first months, when no other help existed, the Armenian Women’s Welfare Association (AWWA-Inc.) stood by us as a true lifeline. Through their immediate and unwavering financial support, Hanganak was able to bring relief, dignity, and hope to our displaced elderly—ensuring they had food, medicine, and the reassurance that they were not forgotten.

Two years have passed since that tragedy. Today, thanks to AWWA’s continued commitment, Hanganak carries on its mission in Armenia, supporting more than 240 elderly people who lost everything but still hold onto hope. On this painful anniversary, we extend our deepest gratitude to AWWA. Your compassion and steadfast support have given our elderly the strength to endure, reminding them that they are not alone.

On December 26, 2022, the ICRC was able to deliver 10 tons of cargo, mostly medicine, to blockaded Artsakh. Thanks to this, Hanganak managed to acquire a limited amount of essential medications for its beneficiaries.
Since November 2023, with the support of AWWA, Hanganak has started providing the promised financial assistance to its beneficiaries displace from Artsakh.
