Healthy Lifestyle Workshops at Hanganak: Learning, Sharing, and Caring Together

In January, Hanganak launched its Healthy Lifestyle workshop series, already holding two meaningful and much-anticipated sessions that addressed health topics especially relevant for older adults. Both workshops were led by Dr. Liliya Seyranyan and were met with great interest and active participation from our beneficiaries.

The first workshop focused on anemias in gerontology. Dr. Seyranyan spoke in detail about the main causes of anemia in older age, its symptoms, possible complications, and effective prevention strategies. Special attention was given to the role of nutrition, with practical guidance on iron-rich and nutrient-dense foods that can support overall health and energy levels. Participants asked many questions, shared personal experiences, and engaged in a lively discussion, making the session both educational and deeply interactive.

The second workshop was dedicated to insomnia, a topic of particular importance, as the majority of our beneficiaries experience sleep disturbances. Dr. Seyranyan provided a clear and accessible explanation of sleep physiology, including sleep phases, common interruptions, and the various causes of insomnia in older adults. She also spoke about sleep hygiene, daily habits that support better rest, and the role of the sleep hormone melatonin, including when and how it may be used appropriately. The discussion was especially active, with participants openly sharing their challenges and asking thoughtful questions, reflecting how relevant and timely the topic was for them.

Following each lecture, learning continued in a more informal and joyful way. Together with the Hanganak team, the group prepared healthy meals, turning knowledge into practice and strengthening the sense of community. After the insomnia workshop, the beneficiaries themselves chose to prepare a beetroot salad with garlic and walnuts.

This salad is not only delicious but also highly beneficial for older adults. Beetroot supports blood formation and circulation, making it especially helpful in cases of anemia. It is rich in fiber, which aids digestion and helps prevent constipation — a common concern in older age. Garlic contributes to cardiovascular health and immune support, while walnuts provide healthy fats, protein, and essential micronutrients that support brain and heart health. Preparing and enjoying this meal together reinforced the importance of balanced nutrition as a key part of a healthy lifestyle.

These first two workshops set a strong and inspiring start for the Healthy Lifestyle series at Hanganak. They reminded us that health education is most effective when it combines professional guidance, open dialogue, practical skills, and shared moments of connection. We look forward to continuing this journey together — learning, supporting one another, and nurturing both body and well-being.
