August Project Update: Making Every Resource Count

In August, Hanganak resumed food distribution for our elderly beneficiaries in Yerevan and the marzes, and the distribution is now nearing completion. This month’s support carries particular meaning for us. Due to current funding constraints, we are no longer able to provide food packages every month. However, by carefully combining available resources and securing additional funding that covers some project expenses in Kotayk region, we were able to redirect part of our limited resources and provide essential food support to our beneficiaries.

For many of the older adults we serve, even a modest food package makes a meaningful difference. Living with limited incomes and continuing to rebuild their lives after forced displacement from Artsakh, our beneficiaries face difficult choices in meeting everyday needs. In this context, providing basic food assistance remains an important part of Hanganak’s commitment to supporting their health, dignity, and wellbeing.

Our August support went beyond food. Particular attention was given to beneficiaries living with diabetes. Those who needed them received insulin syringes and blood glucose test strips, while several beneficiaries who did not have functioning or accessible equipment were also provided with glucometers. These relatively simple supplies are essential for safely managing diabetes and monitoring health at home.

As always, distribution is closely connected with Hanganak’s broader health and social care. Our team reaches beneficiaries both in Yerevan and in the marzes, while those who are able and prefer to do so can visit the Hanganak office. Home visits give our health and social workers an opportunity not only to deliver support, but also to check on each person’s wellbeing, listen to their concerns, and identify needs that may require further attention.

Another important part of our work since July 1 has been formalizing participation in Hanganak’s programme. During home visits and food distribution, our team has been explaining and signing Participation Agreements with beneficiaries. The agreement is designed to establish a shared understanding of Hanganak’s services and of the rights and responsibilities of both Hanganak and each participant, while emphasizing dignity, inclusion and meaningful participation. Currently, agreements have been signed with more than 95% of our beneficiaries.

Importantly, signing the agreement is not simply an administrative procedure. Participation is voluntary, and beneficiaries are encouraged to share their opinions and feedback to help us improve our services. The agreement also creates a framework for better understanding each person’s interests, experience, skills and abilities and, where appropriate, developing an Individual Participation and Engagement Plan that can support meaningful community participation, learning, volunteering and other suitable opportunities.

This period has once again reminded us that meaningful support is not always measured by how much we are able to provide. Sometimes it is about making every available resource count—ensuring that limited funds reach the most important needs, that essential health supplies reach those who depend on them, and that every older person continues to feel seen, listened to and cared for.

Despite scarce resources, Hanganak continues to stand beside our elderly beneficiaries with consistency, responsibility and compassion. Every food package delivered, every health need addressed, every home visited and every conversation shared is part of the same commitment: to protect dignity, strengthen wellbeing and remind our elders that they remain an important part of our community.
