This week, our English class for beneficiaries was led by Gohar Hovhannisyan, Program Manager, as our volunteers were busy with their school exams. To make the lesson as accessible as possible, Gohar prepared handouts for the participants, including the alphabet, numbers with pronunciations, weekdays, months, seasons, and a list of the most commonly used verbs.
In previous classes, we noticed that some participants felt shy because they could not write everything down from the blackboard. Having handouts allowed everyone to follow along confidently, and it made the lessons more engaging. Based on this, it was decided to continue providing handouts for all new materials in future sessions.
The lesson was very interactive and interesting. With the handouts, participants were able to talk confidently about the days of the week, the seasons, and the months within each season. Looking ahead, we plan to explore further tenses—since the simple present tense has already been introduced, the next lesson will focus on the present continuous tense.
Beyond learning language skills, these classes offer a valuable opportunity for togetherness and socialization. For displaced community members, especially at advanced ages, gathering in a safe and welcoming space helps foster connections, build friendships, and share experiences. Hanganak’s mission is deeply rooted in supporting and encouraging our beneficiaries—helping them cope with the challenges of displacement, regain confidence, and feel part of a caring community.
After the lesson, participants enjoyed tea and coffee, prepared by our committed staff, while engaging in a discussion about the importance of learning at any age. Continuing education is essential—not only for knowledge, but also for training memory and maintaining cognitive function. All participants expressed joy and gratitude for this opportunity to learn and grow together.
