Hanganak NGO Awarded Prestigious AWWA Grant to Expand Care for Displaced Armenian Elders
[Yerevan, Armenia] – Hanganak NGO is proud to announce our selection as a 2025 grant recipient by the Armenian Women’s Welfare Association (AWWA), a distinguished U.S.-based organization supporting vulnerable elderly populations. This partnership marks a transformative new chapter in our mission to provide holistic care for elders forcibly displaced from Artsakh.
A Commitment to Dignity and Resilience
Since 2004, Hanganak has delivered life-sustaining medical care, psychosocial support, and essential provisions to isolated elderly Armenians—first in Artsakh, and now for those scattered across Armenia after the 2023 forced exodus. With AWWA’s support, we will:
- Scale our mobile healthcare teamsserving 240+ displaced elders in Yerevan, Ararat, Kotayk, and Lori regions
- Launch a dedicated Elderly Community Centerfor trauma counseling and social integration
- Strengthen chronic disease managementand home care for our beneficiaries and, particualrely, for homebound patients
“This award recognizes the urgent needs of elders who lost everything—their homes, communities, and sense of stability,” said Dr. Gohar Hovhannisyan, Hanganak’s Program Manager. “AWWA’s partnership allows us to restore not just survival, but dignity.”
Why This Matters
Many displaced elders face:
- Unmanaged chronic illnesses (diabetes, hypertension) due to disrupted care
- Severe isolation after losing multigenerational family structures
- Trauma from displacement and cultural dislocation
Hanganak’s trauma-informed model addresses these challenges through:
✔ Medical teams conducting home visits and polyclinic coordination
✔ Social workers providing legal aid and community-building activities
✔ Cultural preservation initiatives (storytelling, intergenerational programs)
