In late September 2023, Artsakh’s population was forcibly evacuated due to a military campaign by the Baku regime. This coerced exodus affected over 100,000 people, including Hanganak staff and the lonely elderly beneficiaries they assisted.
On October 3, 2023, Hanganak’s team convened in Armenia and unanimously agreed to continue the organization’s efforts. Their plan included locating its displaced beneficiaries within Armenia, conducting initial needs assessments, and providing social and medical support to all the located beneficiaries under the auspices of the Armenian Women’s Welfare Association (AWWA).
The initial needs assessment, conducted in October-December 2023, was carried out quickly and under emergency circumstances primarily through telephone interviews, and its findings didn’t fully reflect the real picture. Consequently, there was a need for a more comprehensive needs assessment. Subsequently, in January 2024, the Elderly Project, sponsored by AWWA, was launched in Armenia, and a comprehensive needs assessment survey was initiated concurrently. The study was concluded in May 2024 and involved 195 beneficiaries of Hanganak from Yerevan and 4 marzes of the Republic of Armenia. The findings of the study have been compiled into a comprehensive report, which has been presented to AWWA.
