Every Tuesday, Hanganak Charity NGO hosts psychological group therapy sessions for displaced older adults from Artsakh. Led by Dr. Anahit Lalayan in partnership with the Empathy Foundation, these weekly gatherings provide a safe and supportive space where participants can express their emotions, reflect on their experiences, and strengthen their emotional well-being through meaningful dialogue.
The most recent session was especially memorable, as it marked the final meeting with Avedis Berenson, an AGBU volunteer from the United States who has actively participated in the group’s activities over the past several weeks. In recognition of his dedication and genuine connection with the participants, Dr. Anahit Lalayan invited Avedis to facilitate the group therapy session himself.
For his farewell meeting, Avedis chose a thoughtful topic centered on intergenerational wisdom, hope, and resilience. Participants reflected on four guiding questions:
- What is the most important lesson life has taught you that you would like to pass on to younger generations?
- What experience from your own life do you believe others could learn from?
- What hopes do you have for the next generation?
- What would you tell someone who is struggling with the pain and uncertainty of displacement?
The discussion inspired heartfelt conversations filled with wisdom, compassion, and hope. Participants openly shared the values that have guided them throughout their lives, the experiences that have shaped them, and the lessons they have learned through both joyful and difficult times. Many reflected on the challenges of forced displacement from Artsakh and spoke about the strength, dignity, and perseverance that have helped them rebuild their lives while preserving their identity and hope for the future.
Reflecting on his experience with the group, Avedis shared:
“For me, the most joy comes from being able to interact with these individuals, seeing how welcoming they have been and how curious they’ve been about my experiences and perspectives. It has been a privilege to work with them, hear their stories, and learn from the experiences they have lived through. It’s a beautiful thing.”
He also noted how meaningful it was to witness a place where older adults displaced from Artsakh can openly share not only the hardships they continue to face but also the rich experiences and life stories they carry with them. Listening to their personal journeys gave him a deeper appreciation of their resilience and of the supportive community that has been created through these weekly gatherings.
Hanganak Charity NGO extends its heartfelt gratitude to Avedis Berenson for his warmth, professionalism, and dedicated volunteer service. We are equally grateful to our valued partners—the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) for making this volunteer engagement possible and the Empathy Foundation for its continued collaboration in supporting the mental health and well-being of displaced older adults.
Together, we remain committed to creating opportunities for healing, connection, and dignity, ensuring that the voices, experiences, and wisdom of older generations continue to inspire those who follow.
